Printer Ink Classification

Do you know what common printer inks are?

Dye-based ink -- that is, ink based on dye, which is also the ink used by most inkjet printers at present

Dye ink is a completely soluble ink at the molecular level. This ink is a complete composite solution, and the probability of blocking the ink head is very small. It is easy to be absorbed by materials after painting. The color is gorgeous, and the cost is low. The disadvantage is that it is not waterproof, and because the dye molecules decompose quickly under ultraviolet radiation, it will fade within a month of outdoor use under ultraviolet light. The advantages are bright colors, clear layers, and low price compared with pigment ink. Therefore, it is the preferred product for printing pictures and making color spray business cards.

Advantages: it does not block the nozzle, and the printing color is dazzling.

Disadvantages: it is easy to fade when exposed to direct sunlight or soaked in water.

Pigment-based ink -- ink based on pigment

Pigment ink, to put it vividly, is powdered ink. Of course, this is just an image, which is not accurate enough. To be precise, it grinds solid pigments into very fine particles and dissolves them in special aqueous solvents. It is a suspension solution or semi-solution, which has the same properties as the pigments used in our printed and dyed clothes. Contrary to the principle of dye ink penetrating the medium to form color, it generates color by attaching the color material to the surface of the medium (such as copy paper or printing paper).

Advantages: waterproof and light resistant.  

Disadvantages: large particles are easy to cause plugs, and the color of the printed image is not good and bright.

Coating ink -- colorant insoluble in water and most organic solvents

When pigment inks are used in textile printing and dyeing, they need to be crushed together with dispersants and other additives to make an aqueous dispersion system with fine particles and sufficient dispersion stability. The coating has no affinity for the fiber, and it can only be fixed on the fiber with the help of an adhesive. Coatings are widely used in the textile field and are suitable for the printing and dyeing of almost all fiber fabrics, such as cotton, wool, silk, hemp, polyester, nylon, acrylic, and their blends. Advantages: bright color, wide adaptability of fiber, high safety to the human body, and not easy to be absorbed by the skin.

Disadvantages: the wet rubbing fastness and brushing fastness of the product is poor, and the hand feel is hard.

Weak solvent ink -- environmentally friendly solvent ink

Weak solvent ink is a new kind of ink. The inkjet printing industry has developed rapidly and attracted more and more attention. It is also called eco-solvent ink or light solvent ink. Weak solvent ink is a kind of dye that is insoluble in water and used to print outdoor products. The printed pictures and texts can be placed outdoors for a long time and will not be dissolved.

Advantages: beautiful and rich colors, realistic effects, wide color gamut, excellent color expression, waterproof, wear-resistant, and not easy to decolorize

Disadvantages: relatively smooth materials require a special coating

UV ink -- it can cure quickly and dry instantly

The diameter of pigment particles in UV ink is less than 1 micron, without volatile organic solvents, ultra-low viscosity, and no pungent smell, which can ensure that the ink does not block the nozzle during jet printing. After six months of high-temperature storage test, there are no abnormal phenomena such as pigment condensation, sinking, delamination, etc.

Advantages: strong adhesion, long endurance, and quick drying

Disadvantages: UV irradiation is required, and good ventilation facilities are required
